How To Send Your Save-The-Dates
The first question many brides-to-be ask is “Do brides still mail out Save-The-Dates?”
Yes, they do! While birthday parties, bachelorette parties, corporate events, and more are turning away from the traditional postcard in favor of a “one and done” email, we recommend keeping the tradition alive. Your friends and family will love having a card to hold in their hand, tape to the fridge, or display on the mantel, a reminder of all the fun to come!
When To Mail Them
Once you’ve committed to mailing Save-The-Dates, the next question is “When should I send them?”
You can design your Save-The-Date postcards any time you want but when it comes to mailing, it’s important to be mindful of your guests. Mail your postcards too early and you run the risk of getting trashed or misplaced by accident. Mail your postcards too late and you run the risk of scheduling conflicts. Aim for six to eight months prior to the day you say “I do.” This will give your guests plenty of time to mark their calendars, take off work, book travel and hotel accommodations, save money, and schedule vacations and other events around your Big Day.
Remember: only mail Save-The-Dates to the guests you’re sure you want to attend! If you’re on the fence about someone, set aside a postcard to mail at a later date.
What To Include
Don’t stress about the details. This is the “honeymoon” phase of wedding planning. The only text you need to worry about for your Save-The-Dates are your names, the date, and the city. That’s it! Wedding websites, accommodations, your venue, your menu––all this can wait.
Save-The-Dates are traditionally less formal than your wedding invitations so they don’t need to fit a theme or match the invitations and RSVPs you eventually send. Play around with colors, layouts, and styles to craft a design that will get your guests excited for your upcoming nuptials! For example, your main focus could be:
- a full color posed photograph
- a classic black-and-white snapshot of you standing together, looking off into the distance
- two or three of your favorite photos from your engagement shoot, including a closeup of the ring
- a candid shot of the proposal in action
Or skip the photos altogether and get creative with patterns, motifs, and textures to create a text-only design.
